‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’, The Second Pic From James Gunn & Peter Safran’s DC Studios, Gets Summer 2026 Release

Put it your calendar to wear your tights and capes on June 26, 2026 as the Warner Bros/DC Studios feature take of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theaters.

The Craig Gillespie directed, Milly Alcock starring adaptation of Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated, is the second feature title under the new DC Studios run by James Gunn and Peter Safran after the former’s Superman movie which hits theaters in July 11, 2025. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen.

Gunn said at a DC Studios presser early last year that in their Supergirl “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

As Deadline first told you, House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock won the role of Supergirl, and she’ll appear in another DC project before making her big-screen debut as the Angel of the Sky.

The last time Warner Bros released a Supergirl movie was in 1984. It starred Helen Slater in the title role, Faye Dunaway as the villain and was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. The pic grossed $14M stateside.

DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.

The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.

Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences have come to know on the CW Supergirl series.

The plan is for Supergirl to start shooting this fall, according to insiders. DC Studios also has the Batman movie feature in the works from director Andy Muschietti.

In addition to Supergirl, Warner Bros. announced a handful of other dates for some of its high-profile movies, including New Line’s Mortal Kombat 2, which will hit theaters on Oct. 24, 2025. New Line’s sci-fi thriller Companion will kick off the year and open on Jan. 10, 2025.

The pic is produced by Zach Cregger alongside Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo’s Roy Lee, with Drew Hancock directing. The maverick horror team is also behind the movie Weapons, which will open on Jan. 16, 2026. Cregger is directing that film.

Warners also announced the release date for the animated holiday pic Margie Claus, which is set to open on Nov. 5, 2027. Melissa McCarthy is voicing the title role and is producing alongside Ben Falcone and Pilar Flynn.

That is a piece of good news!

Let's hope the schedule sticks and doesn't get shuffled around too much. This will largely depend on how the new Superman film will fare in 2025. If it goes well, Supergirl will have a decent shot at hitting the target release date.

Having read the DC Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow omnibus (collection of all SG: WOT issues) recently, I can say that this interpretation will be very much different than the ones we've had on screen so far. The SG: WOT series was enjoyable in comic book format and I can only hope that it translates to the big screen equally well and that not too many creative liberties are taken to dilute the overall product.

In any event, it will be very interesting to see how the final product works out. :)

Jason Momoa to Play Lobo in ‘Supergirl’ Movie

The actor has long campaigned for the role.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa is staying in the DC fold. The actor will appear in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, the alien bounty hunter who first appeared in the comics in 1983, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Momoa was the face of the Aquaman franchise for the previous DC regime, appearing as Aquaman in a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before starring in Justice League (2017) and then toplining 2018’s Aquaman. The feature was a massive hit, earning $1 billion and marking the high point for the DCEU films, which ended with last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. That final film was a letdown, earning just $439 million and failing with critics.

Momoa has long wanted to play the character and has talked about it for years, including during the press rounds for The Lost Kingdom. On Monday, the actor shared a quote from that press tour in which he stated he hoped DC would call him about the role. He captioned the quote on Instagram with, “they called.”

There have been various attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen over the years. Filmmakers such as Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton both took stabs, with Dwayne Johnson circling the roll for Peyton’s version. In 2018, Warner Bros. and Michael Bay also flirted with the idea, but the concept never got off the ground. On the small screen, Emmett J. Scanlan played Lobo on the SyFy series Krypton.

Writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen created Lobo for the comic Omega Men No. 3. The blue skinned, cigar chomping alien has superstrength and healing powers, and has fought both heroes and villains.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow arrives in theaters June 26, 2026 and stars Milly Alcock as the hero. It will be the second feature in the new DC Universe overseen by DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Gunn’s Superman movie arriving in July.

Momoa’s casting is noteworthy. When Gunn and Safran took over the DC brand, they left the door open for fan favorite actors from the previous regime to stay in the fold, possibly as different characters. Momoa is the first to continue on, albeit in a new role. Momoa starred opposite Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher in Justice League.

Jason Momoa To Play Lobo In ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

By Matt Grobar

Jason Momoa, star of Warner Bros and DC‘s Aquaman films, has been tapped to play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Deadline has confirmed.

Momoa has been linked to the Lobo role since before James Gunn came in to lead DC alongside Peter Safran. He’s been vocal in the past about his interest in the part and today confirmed his attachment to the role in a post on Instagram, where he screenshotted comments from a past interview.

“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” said the actor. Momoa went on to say that should DC come around asking him to play Lobo, it would be “a f*ck yeah.” Alongside the Instagram screenshot, Momoa posted a caption this morning that reads, “They called.”

An antihero known for his violent and irreverent personality, who hails from the planet Czarnia, Lobo possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities and an invulnerability that makes him a formidable opponent. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the character often is depicted as a bounty hunter who enjoys chaos and destruction. He was first introduced in Omega Men #3 in June 1983.

Plot details for the new Supergirl are under wraps. As previously reported, House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock landed the title role after a long search, with Matthias Schoenaerts boarding as villain Krem of the Yellow Hill. More recently, Eve Ridley came on to play the part of Ruthye Mary Knolle.

Craig Gillespie will direct from a script by Ana Nogueira. The project is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. DC bosses Gunn and Safran will produce, with DC EVP Chantal Nong executive producing. Production kicks off on January 13.

Warner Bros and DC naturally are high on Momoa, given that his recent pair of Aquaman films together grossed more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Upcoming, the actor also has Warner Bros projects including A Minecraft Movie, which releases April 4, and the live-action/animated Animal Friends from Legendary. Additionally, he’ll be seen in Fast X: Part 2, the Apple miniseries Chief of War, and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew opposite Dave Bautista, among other projects.

Momoa is repped by WME and Edelstein, Laird & Sobel. View his Instagram post below.

All I can say is...HERE COMES THE MAIN MAN! Having seen Jason Mamoa's Aquaman as an I don't give a (***) fun loving King of the Seas in Justice League, this role as Lobo was tailor made for him.
